Obtaining a Police Report After an Accident

After an accident, a police report is one of the most important documents you need when filing claim with your insurance, or getting third-party compensation if you’re injured. The report provides all of the details relating to the accident, which will make it easier to get the financial support that you may need.

Two Ways To Get Your Police Report:

  1. Go to the police precinct in the area where the accident occurred within 30 days from when the report was filed.
  2. Use the Collision Report Retrieval Portal, which allows you to retrieve reports taken by the NYPD. According to their website, it may take up to 7 business days from the date of the accident for your report to be accessible on this portal.

It’s important that you get a police report after your accident as soon as possible. The sooner you file a claim for compensation (preferably within 30 days), the better it will be for you. This gives insurance companies more time to respond, and the claim to be sorted quicker.
